| Holocaust art winners
This year about nine of Laurie Brown's students at Stadium High School went to the Holocaust conference held at Pacific Lutheran University in March. The Holocaust Center in Seattle sponsored a high school art competition in conjunction with the conference
.
Six of Brown's students entered the contest and two won awards: Alexander King won first place and Ashley Nagel won an honorable mention. Students sent in nearly 750 entries.
"Other students who entered some really provocative prints were Angela Yun, Stevannah Coleman, Konrad Jurpik and Lilian Rojos," Brown said. "We will be honored on June 9 at a luncheon in Bellevue. I think the conference and the art contest was a great learning experience and made students aware of bullying to the extreme."
Wayzgoose printing
For the sixth year in a row, Stadium High School students participated in the Wayzgoose printmaking event sponsored by King's Books and Springtide Press. Several students participated in the cutting of a three-foot-square piece of linoleum.
Flor Rios and Angela Yun were in charge of inking at the event April 28 at Kings Books. Nine professional artists and Stadium students participated in this year's events. Printmaking senior Flor Rios served as art director and Angela Yun helped with the design. Flor also participated in last year's design.
"We are pleased with the outcome this year," Brown said. "They just seem to get better and better each year."

| ServiceNation, in partnership with Metro Parks and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Tacoma Alumnae Chapter, will host a Stand for Service Washington Town Hall Wednesday, May 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Metro Parks Star Center, 3873 S. 66th St., Tacoma.
Organizers plan to showcase the broad and diverse support national service enjoys in Washington, and highlight the numerous ways AmeriCorps and Senior Corps produce enormous value to our state and the nation as a whole.
This free event is open to the public and will feature complimentary refreshments, a photo booth to take a picture holding up a sign stating why you Stand for Service, free Stand for Service T-shirts, and a town hall on national service with U.S. House and Senate Congressional Staff members and state and local elected officials.
National service is at the core of who we are as Americans. The spirit of service to country was born over 200 years ago and continues to live strong through the nearly 1,000,000 Americans who have served in AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, NCCC and VISTA.
But the tradition of national service in America is once again at risk. On March 21, 2013, the United States House of Representatives passed a budget resolution that calls for the elimination of these vital programs.
Elimination of CNCS will equal $0 for AmeriCorps, $0 for Senior Corps, $0 for National Service.
With so much at stake, ServiceNation asks every national service supporter in Washington to join the organization to Stand for Service.
ServiceNation is working towards the day when a year in a national service program like AmeriCorps is a common expectation for Americans, and when national service is universally accepted as a strategy for putting people to work, tackling pressing social challenges and uniting Americans in common purpose.

| The May 2013 edition of School Administrator highlights Tacoma Public Schools' Career and Technical Education program in "Ramping Up: Career and Technical Studies," by Sarah E. Carr.
Carr's "School Administrator' article described Tacoma and four other districts across the country as representative of public schools with diverse strategies for revitalizing a field many experts believe to be more important than ever.
"Across the country, school districts are putting a new face on the long-stigmatized field of vocational education. They are modernizing the curricula, creating and expanding programs that lead directly to trade certification. They are collaborating, often to cut costs," Carr said.
"Pathways to Prosperity," a 2011 report issued by the Harvard Graduate School of Education, found exploding demand for workers in "middle-skill" occupations such as electricians, construction managers and dental hygienists. The report concludes that a focus on college readiness does not equip young people with all the skills and abilities they will need in the workforce.
Districts must adapt their Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs to meet industry needs for workplace readiness and be innovative. What used to be taught in CTE may no longer be via for the current workforce needs.
"In the career and technical education division of Tacoma, Wash., Public Schools, forestry has become Advanced Placement environmental science, the animal science program now emphasizes pre-veterinary skills, and marine engineering has shifted its emphasis from small pleasure boats to larger commercial vessels," Carr wrote. "All these programs are taught within comprehensive high schools."
The changes are part of an effort to stay relevant as employer and workforce needs evolve, John Page, director of Tacoma's Career and Technical Education programs, told Carr. The animal science program once focused on husbandry and traditional agricultural skills, for instance. But because farming has declined so rapidly, the animal science program strives to prepare students for work in small-animal veterinary clinics where there is high demand and good wages for those who can work with cats and dogs.
"The changes would not have been possible without greater state funding for students enrolled in Career and Technical Education programs, Carr said. School districts get slightly more money for high school students enrolled in CTE programs, a bonus the state legislature extended to the 7th-and 8th-grade students three years ago.
"It's a daily challenge for his program not to be cast as an alternative to a comprehensive quality education," Page said. "But if you've got relevant, rigorous programs, families might not even see it as a career and technical education. They might just say, "That's a program that got it going on.'"
Photos in the article feature a Tacoma student in a Cisco networking class at Stadium High School and students in a Lincoln High School environmental biology class.

| More than 60 Tacoma Public Schools students earned their Youth United Varsity Letter in community service this past year. These high school students, who volunteered this past year from April 1 through March 31, belong to a group of 536 young people receiving a varsity letter Wednesday, May 22 at 7 p.m. at the Washington State Fair Showplex in Puyallup, according to a United Way press release.
A trend among school districts and youth is the incorporation of community service into their high school career. Nowhere is that more evident than in Youth United's Varsity Letter in Community Service program.
Youth United, a program of United Way of Pierce County, will honor Pierce County 536 students who volunteered a combined total of more than 126,000 hours of service in the last year.
Pierce County is the first county in the nation to offer such a program, where students receive a varsity letter for service just like those given to athletes and musicians. United Way of Pierce County is now working with communities across the country to incorporate similar programs, using Youth United's effort as a model.
The Varsity Letter in Community Service program recognizes students in grades 9 through 12 who volunteered 145 hours or more of community service between April 1 and March 31. To qualify, students were required to volunteer with at least one school-related project and one community-related project. The average number of hours for this year's group was 236 hours, with the top number of hours by a single student at 1,500. The value of this volunteer time as determined by national standards set by Independent Sector is over $2.8 million.
The event will honor 322 first-time recipients, 132 second-time recipients, 67 third-year recipients and 15 fourth-year recipients. The winners reflected service from all classes with 169 seniors, 200 juniors, 89 sophomores and 78 freshmen. Thirty-six schools in Pierce County had letter recipients this year, representing all public school districts as well as private and online schools as well.
Of the varsity letter winners, 12 seniors also earned a Willie Stewart Community Service Scholarship for excellence in volunteer work. Eligibility for the scholarship requires students qualify for the varsity letter in community service, describe their most rewarding volunteer experience and demonstrate a history of community service completed throughout high school. Youth United will honor the scholarship recipients with a dinner prior to the Varsity Letter ceremony. Scholarships ranged from $2,000 to $2,500 with a total of $25,000 awarded this year.
Additionally, United Way will honor Youth Volunteer of the Year Tara Adams. The Puyallup High School senior was selected for her outstanding community service and will also be featured as the event's student speaker. Dr. Tim Yeomans, Superintendent of Puyallup School District will also speak. Puyallup School District has the most recipients of any district in the county with 226 students.
Since its inception in 2002, the number of students receiving varsity letters in community service has grown each year. The program distributed just seven letters its first year.
Students volunteered their time with community organizations and school activities such as the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, FISH Food Banks, YMCA, Communities in Schools, American Cancer Society, Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of the USA, Youth United, Key Club and National Honor Society.

| Not many high school students have Gov. Jay Inslee present when they receive an award for developing the best designed application.
The team of Larisa Sarmiento, Banessa Aviles and Ricardo Ramirez-Rubio in Lincoln Center's after-school STEM Club won first prize in the application (app) designing contest, winning a six-week summer job shadow/internship opportunity at Concur, a Redmond-based global tech company that provides online and mobile business travel and expense management solutions. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
The award event provide the Governor the opportunity to highlight business partnerships and student learning experiences that his request STEM legislation (HB 1872 and SB 5755) and STEM Education Innovation Alliance funding would foster across the state. The goal is to prepare and inspire more young people for the great STEM jobs being created in Washington.
The Washington STEM organization helped connect Concur with the Lincoln Center STEM Club
For the past six weeks, Concur employees have taught the 17 STEM Club students basic coding and software development. The project culminated May 10 when Concur executives judged which of the four STEM Club teams developed the best app and awarded prizes with the Governor. Concur provided all the club members with Google Nexus 7 tablets.
This is Concur's first time engaging with students in this capacity, but Concur plans to continue such interactive partnerships.
"These sorts of business-education partnerships are key to providing Washington students with real-world STEM experiences," said Mike Hilton, co-founder of Concur. "As a Washington business leader, this is critical work. Today's students are tomorrow's employees. We need to ensure that all students have a strong foundation in science, technology, engineering and math and are prepared for the STEM opportunities so abundant in Washington."
Lincoln Center science teacher Lee Ann Love, founded the school's STEM Club, and the award event took place in her science classroom. Love launched the club to boost the school's STEM offerings and spur student success. She won a Washington STEM Entrepreneur Award in 2011 which helped to expand club offerings. Washington STEM also helped the STEM Club forge industry connections, including the partnership with Concur and one last year with Lease Crutcher Lewis, a Northwest general contractor.
Other guests included Mayor Marilyn Strickland, Deputy Superintendent Josh Garcia and Concur and Washington STEM executives and other employees.

| When homeless families are helped to find housing, providing children with stability, a place to call home, and a permanent school where they can thrive, good things happen.
Tacoma Public Schools (TPS) and Tacoma Housing Authority began a unique program in 2011 involving McCarver Elementary School families that provides housing support for 50 families for up to five years. Since then, for students involved in the program, attendance has increased and test scores risen – two demonstrable pieces of data pointing to the success of the program.
The Puget Sound Regional Council (PSRC) recently presented the program partners with a VISION 2040 Award. The award showcases stellar work being done to implement the region’s long-range growth, economic and transportation strategy.
McCarver Assistant Principal Michael Knuckles and Patrick Johnson, director of Elementary Education, represented the district at the awards dinner April 25 at the Arctic Club in Seattle.
PSRC describes VISION 2040 as a strategy to accommodate the five million people expected to live in the region by 2040 with an integrated, long-range vision for maintaining a healthy region that promotes the well-being of people and communities, economic vitality and a healthy environment. |

| The Lincoln High School team of Justice Dollar, Danely Caldeo, Luis Siete and Samantha Marquez placed first in the team event at the Veterinary Science Competition with one other team. Thirty-five teams were participating in the competition at Washington State University in Pullman.
"We felt really good about that. However, we did not place in the top 10 for overall event," said Mary Brown, pre-vet teacher at Lincoln. "Our students did such a good job with the Cat Wellness exam presentation that the veterinary student judging that category was very impressed and gave our Lincoln team a score of 580 out of 600."
A special thanks goes to Deb Wong for assisting us with this competition--you really helped.

| After viewing many creative entries, Music Empowers Foundation announced that Giaudrone Middle School won the Music Teachers Matter 2013 contest. The foundation conducted the contest in March in honor of Music in Our Schools Month.
Participants had to submit short videos explaining why their school's music program and its teachers are important and special to them.
Giaudrone's music teacher Stephanie Sheppard served as the inspiration behind Giaudrone's winning video, viedotaped by Jim Stork. Her dedication and passion for music education drives the mission of Music Empowers.
With the Music Empowers Foundation grant prize of $2,500 to support and build its music programs, Giaudrone will purchase a half-size cello, numerous flutes, clarinets, and a quad drum set for its music education program.
"Over 80 percent of the students at Giaudrone Middle School are unable to afford their own instruments," said Andy Davis, founder of Music Empowers Foundation. "Because of this, we are especially pleased to provide this support and knowing that the funds will provide many children with the opportunity to play music."
