Technical Theatre

The theatre program at SOTA focuses on technical theater. Technical theatre is everything that supports a performance, for example, scenic design, construction, lighting, sound, costume and makeup. We have classes in all of these areas including theatre production, which produces three plays per year. We have an artist in residence that teaches Actor's Studio. This class focuses on acting and play reading.

Through our technical theatre program we support our dance and music departments with lighting, sound, costumes, makeup and set design.

We have a partnership with the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts and I.A.T.S.E. local 15. I.A.T.S.E. is the International Alliance of Theatrical and Stage Employees. Our students are getting experience in our own black box theater with student performances and concerts and at the Rialto Theater with showcases and professional performances. All students have the chance to job shadow at the Rialto and Pantages Theaters with professional technicians. One student per year is given a paying job at the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts for one year as a training position for I.A.T.S.E. local 15. They are then able to continue in the union if desired. Students who have graduated and are working in the field are respected as well trained and hard working stagehands.

We also have an internship program at the Seattle Repertory Theater, Tacoma Little Theater, Seattle Opera, and The Broadway Center for the Performing Arts and The Fifth Avenue Theater. Students get a chance to job shadow in other venues. Through our partnerships, students definitely get a real taste of what it would be like to work in professional theater.
