Welcome to
Downing Elementary School—
Home of the Eagles!
Downing Elementary School recognizes that we are learning, working and living in an era that is powered by technology and advanced by global understanding. We accept the responsibility for our school to prepare students to be a part of this dynamic world. We have been engaged in a thoughtful planning process. The result of this effort—our School Improvement Plan—will be the guide that sets our path and the measurement tool that evaluates our success.
Downing Elementary is a neighborhood school where students may walk to school. We have self-contained classrooms serving students from preschool through fifth grade in highly academic and rigorous learning environments. We are excited to be piloting a GATE classroom (Gifted and Talented Education) for third- to fifth-grade students. Our building continues to be maintained at a high level with improvements being made each year.
The core of our curriculum is built on literacy, mathematics, writing, science and social studies. We have been using our literacy assessment tool, Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS), and the Accelerated Reader and Reading Counts programs as an extra incentive for the four years. Literacy, mathematics, writing, social studies and science are taught using a wide variety of tools and activities, including technology integration, guest speakers and field trips to enrich our students’ learning experiences.
