Point Defiance Elementary School

How we're doing

To measure progress toward meeting the School Board’s strategic goals, we use a set of benchmarks that let parents and community members track our progress. It’s like a report card for our school and the whole district.

Welcome to Point Defiance Elementary "Pointing to Excellence"

Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year! I congratulate our students and teachers on the continued improvement on our MSP results. Our school received awards from the state for our top scores!   We believe an important part for this achievement is how we work together as a family – Parents, students, teachers and staff on academics and school. We thank you parents for your help in getting our students to school and working hard on the skills that your children need to succeed.   We cannot accomplish these tasks alone. A child’s success in school is highly dependent upon the positive relationship that is nurtured between the parent and teacher. We need your support. Clear consistent communication between the home and school is essential to ensure your child’s success. We hope you will be involved in your child’s education. We encourage you to volunteer in our school. One feature of Point Defiance Elementary School is our positive approach to being at school.  We have Polar Paws that students can earn for 3R+S (Respectful, Responsible, Ready and Safe).  Students are aware that their positive interactions with all will make a difference how they accomplish everything they need every day.  All Tacoma Schools offer full-day Kindergarten for our youngest students.  It is really wonderful being in a district that recognizes the positive impact of all-day kindergarten!   We also have a state-funded Head Start program for 4 year olds and a before and after school daycare.  Our PTA offers after school activities that are sponsored by many outside agencies such as the YMCA, Broadway Center and the National Tennis Association.  Each session is a little different with many of our students taking advantage of the afterschool programs.
I look forward to working with you, your child, our staff, and our community throughout the year.  It is my hope that your child’s experiences here will be productive, engaging, and enjoyable. Please take time each day to talk with your child about school and lessons learned. Reading to or with your child each day demonstrates to your child the importance of reading and has a significant impact upon reading development and academic achievement.  Should you have any questions or concerns related to Point Defiance Elementary School, please call me 253-571-6900 or stop by to visit with our school.   I look forward to working with you and your child.
