Weigh in on the future of Tacoma’s highly capable programs

The Tacoma Public Schools commissioned a detailed independent analysis of its highly capable education programs. That analysis was conducted by education experts Carolyn M. Callahan, Ph.D. and Holly Hertberg Davis, Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. Callahan presented their final report – with a host of short-term and long-term recommendations – to the Tacoma School Board at its May 13 meeting.

For the upcoming school year, the district’s highly capable programs for gifted students will not change; however, the programs will undergo additional evaluation during the upcoming school year under the direction of Connie Wick, a newly appointed principal on special project.

To hear more about the report and discuss the findings, Carla Santorno, deputy superintendent, will host small community meetings for interested parents and community members. Sessions are limited to 20 people per session. Additional dates will be added if needed to ensure all interested parents have an opportunity to meet with Santorno.

The meetings are scheduled for 6 to 7 p.m. June 2, 7 and 8 at the Tacoma Public Schools Professional Development Center, 6501 N. 23rd St, Tacoma. You only need to attend one. Pre-registration is required. To register, call the Curriculum and Instruction office at 253-571-1120.
