The Tacoma School Board decided yesterday at a special meeting to interview Deputy Superintendent Carla Santorno for the next superintendent to replace Art Jarvis, who will retire after the 2011-2012 school year.
During a special meeting and retreat on Aug. 6, the board discussed options for replacing Jarvis, including whether the current state of Tacoma Public Schools warranted an internal, local or national search.
In the end, board members agreed to search first for candidates from within Tacoma Public Schools. Board President Kurt Miller had said by looking internally for the next superintendent, the board can provide the continued stability for the organization to move forward. Santorno was the only internal applicant.
The board will conduct a public interview on Sept. 7 at 9:30 a.m., at the Central Administration Building, 601 S. 8th St., fourth-floor boardroom.
The public will have an opportunity to submit questions and comments in advance that they would like the board to ask Santorno. A link called
Submit Your Question will be available on the Tacoma Public Schools Web site at
www.tacomaschools.org until Sept. 7.
Following the Sept 7 interview, the board will listen to comments and answer questions before voting at the Sept. 8 board meeting on whether to hire Santorno as the next superintendent or conduct a local or national search.
