Stanley Elementary School is the first school in the Tacoma Public Schools, and the region, to participate in the Young Athletes program sponsored by the Special Olympics of Washington. More than 160 Stanley students, from the ages of 2–7 years old, will participate in the Young Athletes event on Oct. 30 at Stanley Elementary School, located at 1712 S. 17th St., Tacoma, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
Students will rotate every 45 minutes through stations where they can work on their motor skills by learning to kick, throw and catch a ball. Every child will receive a T-shirt, medal and treat from the Young Athletes sponsors. This event is free and parents, guardians, friends and family are invited to attend.
The Young Athletes program is sponsored by Special Olympics of Washington and is geared towards individuals with and without disabilities from the ages two through seven. The Special Olympics of Washington provides year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. By participating in sports, physical fitness and healthcare education programs, Special Olympics of Washington athletes increase self-confidence and social skills, improve physical and motor skills and have better success in leading more productive and independent lives.
