Stadium cross country team takes academic championship

Most schools entering the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) State Academic Championship competition send in the grade point average (GPA) of their best seven to nine runners. Stadium High School entered its boys’ cross country team using the grade point average of 38 runners, and they won the championship with a team GPA of 3.76—the highest GPA in the state among 4A high schools. George Ybarra is the cross country team’s coach.

The academic championship award is sponsored by the WIAA and Les Schwaub Tires.

Other competition honors included:

  •  Varsity football: 3.04 GPA, Coach Jess Nelson, 26 participants—Distinguished Recognition
  • C Team volleyball: 3.4 GPA, Coach Rachel Crossen, 18 participants—Distinguished Recognition
  • Junior varsity volleyball: 3.50 GPA, Coach Pat Taitano, 18 participants—Outstanding Recognition
  • Varsity volleyball: 3.5 GPA, Coach John Dillard, 18 participants—Outstanding Recognition
  • Girls' C team soccer GPA: 3.10, Coach Rick Cantrell, 17 participants—Distinguished Recognition
  • Girls' junior varsity soccer: 3.4 GPA, Coach Steve Cooke, 17 participants—Distinguished Recognition
  • Girls' varsity soccer: 3.28 GPA, Coach Lyndon Harrhy, 18 participants—Distinguished Recognition
  • Girls' swimming: 3.4 GPA, Coach David Baughman, 51 participants—Distinguished Recognition
  • Girls' cross country: 3.25 GPA, Coach Kim Muenz, 41 participants—Distinguished Recognition
  •  Boys' cross country: 3.76 GPA, Coach George Ybarra, 38 participants—Outstanding Recognition

Stadium Athletic Director James Catalinich said, “This is our second academic state championship. The girls’ swim team won in the autumn of 1992.”
