Students taking life drawing at the Tacoma School of the Arts (SOTA) have the opportunity, over the course of a semester, to draw people of a wide variety of ages and body types. In their final project of this semester, students drew a pregnant woman and were challenged to focus on one body part and to incorporate math (Fibonacci numbers) so that the image gives the illusion of being three dimensional when viewed from a certain viewpoint.
This is a process known as anamorphic drawing and sometimes requires the audience to use tools such as mirrored cylinders or mylar to view the work in perspective. Humanities instructor Michele Savage is the subject of the pictures and student knowledge of her interests and personality add a unique and subtle human element to each piece. A new exhibit, “Revealing the Savage,” will be on display from Dec. 18 through Jan. 13 at the Iron Gallery at the University of Washington Tacoma (UWT), 1742 Pacific Ave.
