Nov. 30 First Responders Day at schools

Governor Chris Gregoire signed a proclamation in mid-October, declaring that Nov. 30 is First Responders Day. On that day, local law enforcement officials, firefighters and EMTs across the state will be honored for the life saving work they do.

In Tacoma, Communities In Schools of (CIS) Tacoma eagerly embraced that idea and partnered with Tacoma Public Schools and its School, Family and Community Partnership Office to create a process for schools to say thank you to these special men and women.

On Nov. 30, Communities In Schools of Tacoma and Tacoma Public School students, teachers and principals will be delivering thank-you letters, cards and posters created by students, along with snacks donated by area businesses. The following schools have adopted a fire or police sub-station:

Baker Middle School – 7247 S Park Ave Fire Station #10
Birney Elementary School – Officer Krause and headquarters
Blix Elementary School – 38th St Fire Station
Browns Point Elementary School – Dash Point Fire Department
Edison Elementary School – 56th Street Fire Station
Fawcett Elementary School – Sector 4 substation
Fern Hill Elementary School – 72nd Street Police Station
Geiger Elementary School – 6th & Mildred Fire Station
Grant Elementary School – Fire Station #9 on 6th Avenue

Stanley Elementary School – MLK Police Substation
Tacoma Business Academy -2701 Tacoma Ave Fire Station #2
Washington-Hoyt Elementary School – 25th & Proctor Street Fire Station
Whittier Elementary School – Fircrest police and fire stations

The district and CIS have reached out to local businesses to help make this event extra special for our heroes. Cinnabon, Costco Wholesale and several area Starbuck stores were all eager to join with the efforts.

“What a great way for our community to come out and say thank you to the men and women who protect us to create a better community for all”, said Teresa Maxwell, Communities In Schools of Tacoma Executive Director.
