On Tuesday, Oct. 28, Susan Royce Duncan’s fifth-grade students participated in the Washington State Mock Election. Students voted electronically via the Secretary of State's Web site on the school’s new district laptops. The lesson plans from the Office of the Secretary of State fulfilled the required classroom-based assessment (CBA) and materials from the Pierce County Auditor’s Office. Using the lesson plans, students have been learning about the importance of voting, the cause and effect of voting or not voting and a glossary of election terms.
The fifth graders also came up with the slogan, “Voting is Important,” and created posters using this slogan. Students also developed a list of five questions to ask family members about voting. They shared their responses with their classmates. “This has been an informative and exciting time learning about the importance of voting, and students now understand that every voter has a voice when they exercise their right to vote,” said Royce Duncan.
