Elementary schools open for enrollment Aug. 3-6

All Tacoma Public Schools elementary schools will be open for registration from Monday, Aug. 3, through Thursday, Aug. 6, from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. for kindergarten through fifth-grade students. Parents must bring a completed enrollment packet to their school to register their child during this time.

Although elementary schools are closed for the summer, families can get an enrollment packet at the district’s Central Administration Building, 601 S. 8th St., from 7 a.m.–5 p.m., Monday through Thursday, at the third-floor information desk.

School personnel cannot complete a child’s registration until they receive an enrollment packet. Schools cannot accept enrollment packets sent by mail.

Kindergarten is now an all-day program from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in all district elementary schools. For 2009-10 kindergarten registration, these requirements must be met before your child can be enrolled.

  • Your student must be five years old by Aug. 31, 2009.
  • You must present the child’s birth certificate or other documentation for age verification. A hospital birth certificate is acceptable.
  • You must provide an up-to-date immunization (shot) record. All immunizations must meet Washington state requirements.

The first day of school will be Wednesday, Sept. 2. Please contact the district’s main number at 253.571.1000 if you have any questions about elementary enrollment.

Additional  information:

  •  If you want to have your child attend a district school other than your neighborhood school, a Parent-Initiated Request for Student Transfer form needs to accompany your enrollment packet.
  •  If you live outside the Tacoma Public Schools (TPS) boundary and want to have your child attend a TPS school, you will need to have a signed approved Release of Attendance form from you current school district to go with your TPS enrollment packet.  You also need to have approval from the TPS principal and district personnel and complete a TPS Application for Non-Resident Admittance.
  • Middle and high school offices are open during the summer Monday –Thursday. Call 253.571.1000 for more information.
