Children’s author David T. Greenburg from Portland, Ore., will be visit Washington-Hoyt Elementary School on Friday, Jan. 16, for the school’s Martin Luther King Jr. assemblies. His latest book, “A Tugging String,” is Greenburg’s first novel (historical fiction), based on growing up with a father who was the primary attorney for Dr. Martin Luther King.
The novel describes, with historical accuracy, the events leading up to and following Dr. King’s Selma–Montgomery Voting Rights March of 1965, which helped the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, changing the face of politics in America. It describes the stories of many others whose destinies tie in with this act: from President Lyndon Johnson to J. Edgar Hoover to a woman trying to vote in segregated Alabama to a young David Greenburg.
Greenberg, who has visited Washington-Hoyt in the past, will conduct an assembly in the morning for kindergarten through second-grade students and one at 1:45 p.m. for third- through fifth-grade classes. He will use material from “A Tugging String” for the older students’ presentation in the afternoon.
