CTE staff mentors new teachers

Career and Technical Education (CTE) instructional facilitators have been successfully mentoring new teachers in Tacoma through monthly meetings. Each month, first and second year teachers come together to focus on teacher quality with instructional facilitators, Renee Froembling and Dirk Klover. Through dialogue and feedback, teachers talk about everything from lesson plans, basic organization strategies, student discipline and business partnerships.

Each month, teachers evaluate their own teaching by looking at one aspect. Recently, teachers met at Wilson High School in Danielle Gunn's plant biology classroom to discuss classroom management. During the following month, teachers will meet at Mt. Tahoma High School in Ricky Delpino's woods technology classroom to discuss teacher questioning techniques and the impact on student learning.

“The feedback from previous participants is positive,” said Froebling. “Teachers feel safe and supported in these meetings to talk about challenges and successes in the classrooms. Instructional facilitators also regularly visit these teachers in their classrooms to follow up and best practices. The CTE New Teacher Cohort is about forming professional relationships to engage one another to promote quality teacher instruction.”

Contact Renee Froembling at 253.571.1277 for more information on the CTE New Teacher Cohort.
