Birney’s deaf program to host gingerbread house making Dec. 18

More than 90 students in the deaf and hard-of-hearing program in the Tacoma Public Schools will join together at Birney Elementary School at 9:15 a.m. to build gingerbread houses on Thursday, Dec. 18. The students attend Birney Elementary School, Baker Middle School, Mt. Tahoma High School and Tacoma School of the Arts. Students in the parent infant program and some hard-of-hearing students who attend other schools will also be invited.

“This is about the 15th annual gingerbread event and it is something our students look forward to doing. They began asking about the event in October,” said Paul Bert, sign language interpreter coordinator. “It is a good chance for students to meet up with former classmates who have moved to other schools. The gingerbread house making gives younger students time to interact with older students who can be role models for them.”

He pointed out that it is heartwarming to nearly all of the deaf and hard-of-hearing program’s students together in one place. Bert added, “It is amazing to see all of the information, advice and stories being shared amongst the students.”
