A Message From The Board of Directors:
Why we need a strategic plan

The Tacoma School District 2011-2015 Strategic Plan is the result of our belief that all students achieve their full potential by participation in an educational experience that is relevant, challenging and individualized, an experience that shares such common values as equity, cultural understanding, accountability and leadership and was designed based on the overarching goals of achievement, innovation, instruction, collaboration, early learning, and safety for all students in all schools.

Through this Strategic Plan the Tacoma School District will gain:

  • A roadmap that drives district initiatives
  • Educational programs and philosophy rooted in the district’s core values
  • A laser-like focus on students meeting/exceeding academic standards
  • System accountability for meeting the academic needs of all students
  • Parent and community partnerships to meet the social, emotional and academic needs of children
  • Annual budgets that reflect the district’s prioritized goals and objectives

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
All students will perform at or above grade level, and we will eliminate disparities among all groups of students.

Academic Excellence Update: In this report to the School Board​ on Oct. 17, 2013, staff members showed the latest data trends, which demonstrate favorable results.

Academic Excellence Update: In this report to the School Board​ on May 16, 2013, staff members showed how the district will increase rigor by increasing the number of students enrolled in advanced, higher-level courses.

Academic Excellence Update: In this report to the School Board on Feb. 14, 2013, graduation rates show a two-year improvement overall but highlight several subgroups of students who struggle to graduate.  
 
Academic Excellence Update: In this report to the School Board on Feb. 20, 2014, data analysis shows progress on the districts Academic Excellence benchmarks.
 
 
PARTNERSHIPS
We will fully engage our parents, community and staff in the education of our children.

Partnerships Update: In this report to the School Board​ on Sept. 23, 2013, staff members outlined the final list of benchmarks, or measurements, that will help the district measure its progress in creating more, effective partnerships.
 

EARLY LEARNING
We will focus on early assessment and intervention at the Pre-K through third grade levels to ensure early academic success.

Early Learning Update: In this report to the School Board on Nov. 4, 2013, staff members provided data updates on the benchmarks for progress toward early academic success of students.
 
Early Learning Update: In this report to the School Board​ on April 18, 2013, staff members outlined the benchmarks that will measure progress toward early academic success of students.
 

SAFETY
All schools will create and maintain safe learning environments that promote excellent academic achievement.
 
Safety Update: In this report to the School Board on Jan. 16, 2014, staff members outlined some of the data from school climate surveys to provide a status report on school safety.
