Stafford Elementary School

1615 S. 92nd St., Tacoma, WA 98444

As a result of overcrowded elementary school conditions in Tacoma’s south end neighborhoods, the Tacoma Public Schools commissioned the construction of Stafford Elementary as part of the 2001 bond issue.

The new school was organized around a gently curved, two-story main building. This primary space, filled with diffused natural light from both clerestory windows and from three tall, glazed entries, provides a clear and exciting point of orientation for users.

During construction, careful attention was given to the placement of the school in an effort to take advantage of the natural topography of the site and to preserve the existing mature oak and fir trees which impart so much character to the site.
