Gray Middle School

6229 S. Tyler St., Tacoma, WA 98409

Gray Middle School was housed in its old building on South 60th Street from September 1926 until January 2009. However, with the new building having been completed ahead of schedule at the site of the old Mount Tahoma High School, something unprecedented took place. With the agreement of teachers, staff, students and the community, the district opened the school in the middle of the school year.

The new Gray Middle School site and programs are united within a high-performance building that brings students, teachers and the community together. At the facility’s heart, a two-story gallery provides a dynamic forum for gathering that encourages communication. Views into surrounding learning spaces reinforce a shared identity and celebrate student achievement.

The school supports 750 students with: 30 general classrooms, six science-specific classrooms, a library, band, chorus and art classrooms, and a computer lab.

Throughout, the sustainable building supports the school’s educational objectives with healthy environments and design features that integrate curriculum with everyday activities. Outdoor learning areas and green building features connect students with the natural world and resource conservation, engaging them in the cultivation of tomorrow’s sustainable communities.

Gray Middle School was completed in December 2008.
