Free breakfast and sack lunches are available for children
The Tacoma School District, Nutrition Services Department, in partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture, announces the sponsorship of the Summer Food Service Program for Children. Meals will be made available at the sites, dates and times below at no charge to all children ages one through 18 years of age.
What is the Summer Food Service Program?
The Summer Food Service Program is a federally funded child nutrition program that feeds children free nutritious meals during the long summer break when school is out and children do not have access to school meals.
Who is eligible for a free meal this summer?
All children, ages 1 through 18 years, are eligible to eat a nutritious breakfast and lunch when the summer food program is in session [see the list of sites, meals and times.] There is no required registration or fees. There is no requirement that children be enrolled in the district’s summer school program. All children from the community are welcome to a free meal. Just show up at the advertised serving time. All children are served on a first come-first served basis.
Are there program rules for the Summer Food Service Program?
Yes. The Summer Food Service Program is a program for children under sponsorship of the United State Department of Agriculture. Certain guidelines are required for the district to receive federal reimbursement for the meals served. Some of the guidelines are that the entire meal must be eaten on site; no portion of the meal may be taken out of the meal serving area. Children must take all meal items, but are not required to eat everything. A place in the meal serving area is set aside for items that children do not wish to eat [Goody Table]. Hungry children may take meal items from the Goody Table to be eaten in the serving area. Another guideline is that adults may not eat any portion of a child’s meal.
