Guidance & Counseling

 

The mission of the Tacoma Public School's Guidance and Counseling Department is to increase student achievement by providing support and removing barriers in academic, career, and personal/social development, with the ultimate outcome that all students become productive citizens.

Here are some samples of what we offer:

Elementary Schools
Middle Schools
High Schools
  • Individual guidance for students regarding academic progress, social and personal concerns, and educational planning.
  • Small groups for personal, social, and academic needs. Focus may include learning skills, decision-making, friendship, acceptance of responsibility, and self-concept.
  • Classroom guidance activities dealing with the normal developmental concerns of children. Topics might include building a positive self-image, getting along with others, making choices, career awareness, and self awareness.
  • Parent consultation regarding student progress, behavior, and academic growth.
  • Special program assistance in the referral, assessment, and placement of students in specialized programs such as special education, gifted, bilingual, or remediation.
  • Referral assistance and consultation with community agencies and services for families who indicate need or interest.
  • Orientation and transition assistance for students new to school and for those transitioning between grade levels.
  • Drug and alcohol prevention and intervention; classroom-based instruction and activities (“Project Alert”).
  • Transition from elementary to middle school, and middle school to high school.
  • Career education and academic planning for high school and beyond.
  • Information and classroom-based instruction regarding harassment, intimidation, bullying, and violence prevention (“Get Real About Violence”).
  • Assistance with special education, gifted education, and community referrals and services.
  • Education and assistance with alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
  • Parent and student consultation regarding planning, student needs, program offerings, and academic progress.
  • Consultation and guidance regarding testing results, high school planning, and social growth.
  • Assistance and information regarding Section 504, special education, and gifted programs.
  • Assistance regarding conflict management and social development.
  • Assessment and placement of students
  • with regard to reading comprehension.

 

  • Transition assistance from middle to high school.
  • Career planning and post-secondary transition.
  • Guidance and advice for course selections.
  • Guidance and preparation for the Culminating Project.
  • College information and assistance with application process.
  • Coordination with community resources and agencies.
  • Assistance and referrals for substance abuse treatment.
  • Liaison assistance with various community agencies (BECCA court system, drug/alcohol/tobacco prevention and intervention services).
  • Consultation regarding student progress, behavior, and academic growth.
  • Assistance in the referral, assessment, and placement of students in specialized programs such as special education, 504, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, etc.
  • Assistance with planning and taking college placement exams (AP, SAT, PSAT, ACT
