Dept. of Assessment, Research & Evaluation

We develop and support the evaluation and understanding of district educational programs by building the tools and maintaining the data district staff and the public need in order to monitor the effectiveness of our schools and programs.

Our responsibilities:
  • Managing the administration of state-wide and system-wide testing programs in the Tacoma Public Schools
  • Managing the approval process for requests to conduct individual or institutional research in the Tacoma Public Schools
  • Providing data and information to assist in the evaluation of programs being used in the district
  •

Parent Resources

Parent Resources include a variety of handouts, materials, and tools to help parents understand Assessments including the new Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium.

State and District Assessments

We test students regularly to assess their progress as they move through school. State testing includes the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (Smarter Balanced or SBAC), Measurements of Student Progress (MSP), High School Proficiency Exams (HSPE), and End-of-Course (EOC).

The District Assessments consist of the Think Central Math Assessment, Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA2), Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI), SpringBoard, and the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test 2nd Edition (NNAT2).

Research & Evaluation

The Research & Evaluation Department (R&E) is responsible for analyzing and summarizing student achievement. This includes conducting program evaluations, reporting required by external funding sources (federal grants, for example), as well as internally identified programs about which we want objective analyses of implementation and/or impact. R&E also manages the approval process for requests to conduct individual or institutional research in Tacoma Public Schools.
