Supplemental Educational Services

What are Supplemental Educational Services?

  • Additional academic instruction to increase the academic achievement of students who are low income and who attend schools that have not made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for 3 or more years.
  • The per student allocation for SES free tutoring for the 2011-2012 school year is $1,408.00
  • SES is in addition to instruction provided during the school day, and must be consistent with the content and instruction used by the school district. They are aligned with the State’s academic content and achievement standards.
  • SES must be high quality, research-based, and specifically designed to increase student academic achievement.
  • For the 2011-2012 school year, students at the following schools who participate in free or reduced lunch are eligible to apply for free SES tutoring.

SES Timeline for the 2011-2012 School Year

Tacoma Public Schools complies with federal law, 34 CFR Part 200, to ensure that free tutoring information is available to schools and parents during a minimum of 2 separate enrollment windows, at separate points during the school year, that are of sufficient length to enable parents of eligible students to make informed decisions about requesting SES and selecting a provider (Section 200.48 paragraph (d)(2)(i)(B)(3). The following information will be distributed and made available to schools, families, and/or providers during the 2011-2012 school year:

  • A letter (with translations) is sent in August informing parents that free tutoring may be available at eligible schools and that specific information will be sent home in September.
  • In September, letters (with translations) are sent to families, schools, and providers informing them that the first open enrollment period will be October 1-22, 2011,and if needed on January 24 thru February 11,2012. An enrollment form, and an invitation to the Parent/Provider Information Night on Friday, October 7, 2011, at Giaudrone Middle School is included in this letter. Free transportation is provided from the home school.
  •  All enrollment forms received by the deadline are processed beginning the week of October 10, 2011.
  • Beginning the week of November 4, SES providers will come in to sign contracts, and letters to parents are sent to confirm tutor choice.
  • Monitoring/review of student learning plans, enrollment, provider invoices, learning plans, and progress reports, via EZSES, continues throughout the year
  • May 2012, a survey is sent to all parents of SES enrolled students, student survey's are done.
  • SES provider summary report is completed and submitted to OSPI before June 30, 2012.
