School Facility Improvements & Technology Upgrades Levy
(Last Capital School Improvements measure passed by voters in 2001)

District-wide Needs - Aged and Deteriorated Schools

  • Classroom and school facility upgrades
  • Arts, Music, and Athletic facility upgrades
  • Playgrounds, playfields, basketball courts, play area improvements
  • Remodel Performing Art Centers; All-weather turf replacement, and tracks
  • Energy-efficient heating/lighting and utilities
  • Replace Baker (originally built 1954) and Hunt (1957) middle schools; Renovate Washington Elementary (1906)

District-wide Health, Safety, Security and Preservation Improvements

  • Roof replacements
  • ADA Accessibility – school building and parking improvements
  • Upgrade alarm, security, sprinkler and surveillance systems
  • Upgrade plumbing, heating and ventilation systems to maintain clean air and water

District-wide Technology Upgrades - Up-to-date Tools for Teaching and Learning

  • Replace/upgrade student and teacher computers (50% below standard)
  • Online access for parents and students to grades, homework, attendance, discipline
  • Install Smartboards, Highspeed Internet, Mobile computing
  • Teacher technology, professional development and support

Costs

  • Continues Long-term "Tacoma Renewal & Excellence Program"; Average annual levy rate would be $1.03 per $1,000 assessed home value for 6 years:

Technology Upgrades

  • Replace student computers to standards
    (50% below minimum state education standards)
  • Provide online access to parents and students for Grades, Homework, Attendance, Discipline
  • Install classroom Smartboards (computer-based whiteboards, interactive curriculum delivery)
  • Implement wireless/mobile computing for students and staff
  • Upgrade network to increase Internet performance in classroom
  • Provide on-site technology specialists/support for classroom teachers
  • Provide professional development for teachers to integrate technology in curriculum
  • Upgrade all teacher computers per state education standards
  • Create a system for teachers and administrators to use data to best address student academic needs
