The State of Washington has a multi-billion-dollar budget deficit due to the economic recession. Gov. Chris Gregoire has proposed a wide range of budget cuts, including a cut of $2.2 billion to K-12 education in the next two-year state budget.
Since then, the House and Senate have now approved state budgets that make a total of $1.9 billion in cuts to K-12 education.
For Tacoma Public Schools, the reductions in state funding will mean budget cuts estimated at more than $20 million over the next three years.
