Literacy

 

 Elementary School Literacy

 

The elementary Literacy District Adopted Materials are:

  • K/1 Lucy Calkins First Hands Writing Program
  • K/1 Read Well
  • 2-5 Step Up to Writing
  • 2-5 Reading Street
 

 Middle School Literacy

 
Language Arts classes encompass reading, writing, and communication skills with an emphasis on literary text. Students will write in narrative, persuasive, and expositiory modes and be assessed using a variety of rubrics. Students will read a variety of fiction and nonfiction materials for different purposes. Effective communication skills will be taught and practiced throughout the year, in presentations, participation, and collaboration.
 
Reading classes are taught at the instructional level of the students and focus on specific reading strategies applied to informational text. Students will write in response to reading to communicate comprehension.
 

 High School Literacy

 

High School students are required to pass eight semesters of English (4 credits total) including: Freshman 1 and 2, Sophomore English 1 and 2, and four semesters of other English Core Courses.

English classes emphasize reading, writing and communication. Students will write in narrative, persuasive, and expository modes and be assessed using a variety of rubrics. Students will read in a variety of genres in both literary and informational text. Effective communication skills will be taught and practiced throughout the year in presentations participation, and collaboration.
